When Allah (s.w.t) created Mankind, the first relation that was bestowed upon us was the relationship between spouses. This relationship is identified as a connection of love, peace, and serenity. The importance of this relationship is immeasurable. But know that it is enough to make it the primary target of Shaitan (devil) to create animosity and conflicts between two people united in the name of marriage. The question that arises from the previous statement is what makes this relationship a primary objective of Shaitan’s agenda.
Marriage and Families
The relationship after marriage blossoms into the beautiful infrastructure of a family. Family is an integral part of the foundation of any society. Any sort of imbalance, flaw, or inadequacy can create imminent chaos that will weaken the foundation of not just the society but also the structure of families which ultimately leads to several miseries for upcoming generations.
The illustration of life after marriage is usually portrayed as a life of romance and happily ever afters. The propaganda of instilling misinformation and improper education regarding marriage starts at quite an early age through children’s books and stories of princesses and princes falling in love and leading a blissful life with no issues at all. Unfortunately, youngsters are not provided the knowledge and training with regards to their responsibilities, rights, and realistic affairs they may have to deal with after marriage. The distorted facts create delusional fantasy-like imagery in their minds which weakens the bases of their relationship which they entered unprepared.
Educating on Marriage
Which sort of education should be our primary focus to pass onto the ones who are planning to get married?
Some important values we must teach our children are equality and trust. Others include mutual compassion and love that is not only limited to love letters and romantic gestures but also practical behavior and dealing with tough circumstances together. Developing trust and protecting each other’s honor. Teaching that the husband’s dignity is an integral part of the wife’s dignity and vice versa. To solidify the foundation of marriage, they must unite and share with love, compassion, and compromise. Although marriage is one of the most beautiful relations to ever exist, we cannot ignore the challenges one might have to encounter later.
Our future is dependent on the consensus of this relationship, yet we do not provide the education of pre-marital training to the youngsters that are about to get married. Any person beginning this relationship must be religiously, emotionally, intellectually, and physically prepared for the unpredictable circumstances they may have to face after marriage. Entering a new relationship without any proper vision is idle. Therefore, we must obligate pre-marital education to provide a vision to our next generation. It would be beneficial to us as both families and a whole society.
Vision and Aim
Fortunately, Islam has provided a proper method in regards to teachings about marriage. Allah (s.w.t) mentions in the Qur’an; ‘They are like garments unto you as you are like garments unto them’. There is no concept of a family without marriage in Islam. Marriage should be based on certain principles and discipline to establish peace and unity amongst two independent people that unite together to follow the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) and build a healthy relationship which ultimately leads to a healthy family and later a healthy society.
This ultimate vision and proper education must be the mandatory dowry that should be given to every couple before marriage.
